This artwork embraces one of the last remaining fragments of Creole's original 1927 sail, a thick canvas hand-stitched by countless craftsmen and women at Ratsey & Lapthorn, the world's oldest surviving sail loft, established in 1790. Each seam carries the weight of human labour, the rhythm of needles piercing cloth, the quiet endurance of men and women whose work was built to endure oceans. I have layered this original piece within cream-coloured cotton sail cloth, blending the two technologies in same material. Above lies my photograph of Creole powering through the start line of the La Nioulargue regatta in Saint-Tropez in the 1980s. Designed by Charles E. Nicholson and launched at Camper & Nicholson's Gosport yard in 1927, she is the world's largest wooden sailing yacht. Today, Creole remains under the ongoing, longterm protection and guardianship of the Gucci family. Allegra Gucci, now the custodian of this beautiful yacht, kindly wrote these beautiful words to be included in this artwork.
